American and libertarian? Here's a place after your heart.
Sat Jan 27, 2007
I wonder if you are confusing libertarians and anarchists. The defining principle of libertarian philosophy is to keep government as small as possible, not to eliminate it. Elimination of government is the defining principle of an anarchist philosophy. Lagos sounds more like an anarchists paradise.
A Question of Privacy
Wed Jan 17, 2007
At the same time, we as people do not tend to consciously separate the notions in our minds so much. We either have privacy, or we don't in a given situation, and we tend to try to use some sort of anonymity (or as I said in the article, "pseudonymity") as a tool to ensure some degree of privacy.

A Question of Privacy

Celestina, it helps if you separate the concepts of privacy and anonymity. The 4th amendment guarantees freedom from unreasonable searches of our person, residences and property. The concept of privacy is attached to a persons possessions and immediate surroundings.
How To Fix the Government, Make it Bigger

The Nature of Science - Why Gravity is "Just a Theory"

Adam, your description of inductive reasoning is pretty loose. There are two necessary conditions that must be satisfied in an inductive proof. 1. There must be a BASE CASE and proof that the conjecture is true for the BASE CASE.
American Education: The Problem or the Symptom?
Sun Dec 17, 2006
I agree but, the participants, parents, teachers and administrators, must communicate with and respect the contribution of the other participants to provide effective guidance and parenting.
American Education: The Problem or the Symptom?
Sun Dec 17, 2006
Parents, teachers and government used to agree and participate equally in decisions on the curriculum, teaching methods, student conduct standards and disciplinary methods. That is no longer the case. There are many causes that eroded the state of agreement that existed in the 50's and early 60's.
Is free speech responsible for the death of common sense?
Tue Dec 12, 2006
Simon is correct. The enemy is ignorance not free speech. The problem is that there are so many people willing to believe something based only on its emotional appeal even when there is no evidence to support that belief. So holocaust denial and conspiracy theories are similar to religious movements.
